Evaluación de técnicas de amplificación de ácido nucleico (NAT) para detección del virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana, hepatitis C y hepatitis B en bancos de sangre. [Assessment on nucleic acid amplification techniques (NAT) for human immunodeficiency, hepatitis C and hepatitis B virus screening in blood banks] Buenos Aires: Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS). Informe de Respuesta Rapida No, 407. 2015 Authors' conclusions Even though there is little evidence of moderate methodological quality showing that the use of the nucleic acid amplification technique (NAT) is effective for screening of human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C virus and hepatitis B virus within the window period, the extent of the benefits of its routine use in blood samples from donors has not been clarified yet. Although NAT is widely used around the world and many international guidelines and standards recommend it, its implementation is not mandatory in many other countries. The World Health Organization still does not recommend it as a routine practice for all the countries, specially because it is considered that the potential benefits of its application are low when compared with its high cost. Its use might be accounted for in settings with a higher prevalence or incidence of blood borne infections.
