Citation Calderón M, Pichon-Riviere A, Augustovski F, García Martí S, Alcaraz A, Bardach A, Ciapponi A, López A, Rey-Ares L. Reparación endovascular para aneurisma de aorta torácica y toraco-abdominal. [Endovascular repair of thoracic and thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm] Buenos Aires: Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS). Informe de Respuesta Rapida No. 415. 2015 Authors' objectives To assess the available evidence on the efficacy, safety and coverage related aspects regarding the use of endovascular repair in thoracic and thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms. Authors' conclusions The evidence found about the use of endovascular thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic
aneurysm repair is scarce and of poor methodological quality. There are no randomized clinical trials assessing endovascular repair vs. open surgery. Based on observational studies, endovascular repair might have a benefit in short-term mortality and shorter hospitalization periods.
In most cases, the Clinical Practice Guidelines, Health Technology Assessment reports and coverage policies consider open surgery is the treatment of choice and that endovascular repair is an alternative only for specific patients at high surgical risk (due to severe comorbidities) and with favorable anatomic characteristics for the use of endoprosthesis.
