Record Status This is a bibliographic record of a published health technology assessment from a member of INAHTA. No evaluation of the quality of this assessment has been made for the HTA database. Citation Ludwig Boltzmann Institut fuer Health Technology Assessment (LBI-HTA). Stimulation des ganglion sphenopalatinum (SPG) bei therapierefraktärem clusterkopfschmerz. [Neurostimulation system for cluster headache] Vienna: Ludwig Boltzmann Institut fuer Health Technology Assessment (LBIHTA). Decision Support Document No. 86. 2015 Authors' objectives Custer headache (CH) is a primary headache disorder, which is characterised by mainly short-term, recurrent, severe unilateral pain with accompanying autonomic symptoms. A small amount of cluster headache patients (1 %), especially those with chronic cluster headache (CCH) is therapy-resistant. The stimulation of the Sphenopalatine Ganglion (SPG), besides various invasive and minimally invasive operative procedures, is a new treatment method for these patients. The aim of our systematic review is to compare the efficacy
and safety of the SPG stimulation of patients with therapy-resistant cluster headache with no treatment. Authors' conclusions The available evidence is not sufficient to demonstrate superiority of the SPG stimulation for patients with therapy-resistant cluster headache compared to no treatment. New studies may have an impact on the estimate of effect. We propose a re-evaluation when further results from RCTs are available (probably in 2019). At present, the inclusion of SPG stimulation into the hospital benefit catalogue is not recommended.
