Low back pain affects the majority of the U.S. population at some point in their lives. Approximately 15% to 30% of chronic low back pain originates in the sacroiliac (SI) joint. SI joint pain has several causes such as degeneration, inflammation, and trauma. The SI joint is the largest axial joint in the
body, located in the bony pelvis between the sacrum and the ilium of the pelvis. The primary function of this ligamentous system is to support the spine while allowing adequate range of motion in multiple planes of movement. Conservative treatment for low back pain of SI joint origin includes
medication, physical therapy, and steroid injections.
