Citation Selenia dimensions digital tomosynthesis system (Hologic Inc.) for diagnostic mammography. Lansdale: HAYES, Inc.. Healthcare Technology Brief Publication. 2012 Authors' conclusions Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death after lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed in 2011, and approximately 39,520 deaths were attributed to the disease. Despite widespread use and acceptance of cancer screening, screen-film and fullfield digital mammography (FFDM) systems can miss approximately 20% of cancerous lesions. New breast imaging technologies are being developed to increase cancer detection rates and reduce unnecessary recalls, which cause patients to undergo unnecessary additional imaging, radiation exposure, and anxiety. Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has been developed to improve cancer detection rate and reduce or eliminate problems associated with mammography, including image noise caused by overlapping of breast tissue (which may conceal or imitate cancer cells) and difficulties in imaging dense breast tissue.
