Healthcare Technology Brief Publication. 2012 Authors' conclusions The clinical management of patients with burns is a challenge due to both the pain that the injuries inflict, and the high risk of wound infection, which is a significant source of morbidity and mortality. The care of burn wounds requires regular evaluation, debridement (removal of dead tissue) and cleansing, and reapplication of antimicrobials and dressings. Debridement prepares the wound bed for dressing and grafting by removing necrotic, infected, and devitalized tissue and exposing healthy underlying tissue. While there are several techniques, surgical or sharp debridement is the standard of care for the preparation of the wound bed for further treatment, and is typically performed with a scalpel blade or scissors. An emerging technology for debridement is hydrosurgery, the excision of tissues and debris by water dissection.
