Citation Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for metastatic melanoma. Lansdale: HAYES, Inc.. Directory Publication. 2014 Authors' conclusions Positron emission tomography (PET) has been proposed as an imaging tool for detection or confirmation of melanoma metastasis. PET is a 3-dimensional imaging technique that evaluates the level of physiological and biochemical activity within tissue cells by measuring the distribution of an injected or inhaled radiotracer. Due to differences in metabolic rates, the concentration of radiotracers within cancerous cells differs from the concentration in the surrounding normal tissue cells.
