Record Status This is a bibliographic record of a published health technology assessment. No evaluation of the quality of this assessment has been made for the HTA database. Citation Exparel (Bupivacaine liposome injectable suspension; Pacira Pharmaceuticals Inc.) for treatment
of postoperative pain. Lansdale: HAYES, Inc.. Healthcare Technology Brief Publication. 2014 Authors' objectives Many patients (more than 80%) have postoperative pain or acute pain after surgery with fewer than 50% receiving adequate relief. Poorly controlled postoperative pain may negatively impact clinical outcomes and is associated with problems such as poor wound healing, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, coronary ischemia, myocardial infarction, and pneumonia. Complications arising from ineffective postoperative pain management can reduce quality of life, lengthen hospital stays, increase readmission rates, and lead to development of chronic pain. Postoperative pain management may include intravenous medication delivered via a patient-controlled analgesia pump, epidural analgesia, spinal anesthesia, nerve blocks, local anesthetics, opioid and nonopioid analgesics, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Bolus injection of local anesthetics into the surgical site is an option for pain control; however, the duration of effect is limited to several hours. A long-acting local anesthetic has the potential to improve postsurgical pain control, reduce the
need for systemic opioid use, and reduce complications.
