Citation Gonzalez L, Pichon-Riviere A, Augustovski F, García Martí S, Alcaraz A, Bardach A, Ciapponi A, López A, Rey-Ares L. High-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells in patients with recurrent childhood medulloblastoma. Buenos Aires: Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS). Informe de Respuesta Rapida No. 498. 2016 Authors' conclusions The evidence supporting high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells for the treatment of recurrent childhood medulloblastoma is scarce and low-quality. Although some studies have shown high survival rates at three years, most of them are very heterogeneous and include group of patients with different central nervous system tumors, who underwent several therapeutic interventions. These characteristics and the lack of studies comparing it with other therapeutic alternatives do not allow drawing any conclusion as regards its efficacy, superiority of one conditioning regimen to another, or of a single versus tandem treatment.
Since there is no standard treatment; there are few therapeutic options, and it is difficult to conduct comparative studies in this population, the main International Societies consider it a therapeutic alternative, and it is covered by several of the health Sponsors surveyed when performed only once.
In Argentina, its indication in the clinical setting is not supported by the Instituto Nacional Central Único Coordinador de Ablación e Implante (INCUCAI, Unique Central National Institute Coordinator of Ablation and Implant).
