Citation Mengarelli C, Ciapponi A, Pichon-Riviere A, Augustovski F, García Martí S, Alcaraz A, Bardach A, López A, Rey-Ares L. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy with foam in chronic vein insufficiency. Buenos Aires: Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS). Documentos de Evaluación de Tecnologías Sanitarias, Informe de Respuesta Rápida N° 460. 2016 Authors' conclusions Moderate-quality evidence suggests that ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy with foam did not prove to be more effective than other therapies such as radiofrequency ablation, laser or surgery in chronic vein insufficiency.
The different clinical practice guidelines recommend this technology as a therapeutic choice for symptomatic varicose vein syndromes, incompetent saphena veins, reticular varicose veins, telangiectasias and residual varicose veins after having performed other treatments.
Some United States and British sponsors cover this technology only in varicose vein syndrome in large, small and accessory symptomatic saphena veins, more than 2.5 mm, with vein insufficiency documented by Echo Doppler. Other sponsors consider it a cosmetic treatment or at experimental phase.
